A Reading Summary or Concept Map of Platos Republic Book II The purpose of this assignment is to ease you into ancient philosophical texts in this case Platos Republic. By working with the original translations rather than modern interpretations you will be introduced to the idea that these ancient texts often have many interpretations and applications. In the case of Platos Republic Book II, these texts have been used to explore ideas such as justice, utopia and education to name but three. The goal here is for you to provide a simple summary of Platos Republic. Please note that this is a summary exercise, not an exercise in analysis. There is no need for interpretation at this stage. That will come in future assignments. Please also note that there is no need for you to use outside sources for this assignment. The original text, the course PowerPoints and class discussions provide ample information to complete the assignment. Should you choose to use outside sources, I would recommend extreme caution as these texts are interpreted in many ways and are rarely presented as simple summaries. So, by using outside sources you run the risk of submitting something that is not a summary but someones interpretation of Platos Republic. Alternatively, you may submit a 600 word (plus or minus 10%) summary of Book II of Plato’s Republic. If you choose this option you will be expected to write a standard essay with an Introduction paragraph, three to four topic paragraphs and a conclusion that summarises the important parts of Platos Republic. The highlights will be discussed in class (for the face-to-face version of the course) and/or online (for the online version of this course). As with the concept map this is a simple summary. There is no need for analysis or interpretation and you are expected to follow APA guidelines including but not limited to title page, pagination, in-text references and a references page.
